O padrão UMTS (WCDMA/HSDPA) é o padrão de 3G predominante no Brasil sendo adotado por todas as operadoras, inclusive a Vivo.
A Anatel realizou em 2007 uma licitação de frequências em 1900/2100 MHz para a implantação de redes 3G. As empresas que adquiriram estas frequências foram: Vivo, Tim, Claro, Oi, Brt e CTBC (mais detalhes). Algumas destas redes, como as da Tim e BrT, estão prontas para entrar em operação e aguardam a assinatura do termo de autorização da Anatel.
A Anatel alocou as frequências de 1900/2100 MHz para implantação da 3G no Brasil. Não existe, no entanto, impedimento para se utilizar outras faixas de frequências para 3G. Vivo, Telemig e Claro implantaram suas redes 3G em 850 MHz.
